Calder: Dream On Dream On goes to front

Dream On Dream On wins the Simply Majestic Stakes at Calder on Saturday.

In a field that appeared loaded with speed, Dream On Dream On surprisingly went right to the front and led throughout en route to a 1 3/4-length victory over Magic Speed in the $75,000 at Calder.

Making his stakes debut for trainer Bill Kaplan, Dream On Dream On outsprinted 8-5 favorite Lord Robyn and Nicandro for the early lead after cutting out fractions of 22.54 seconds and 45.90 over a firm turf course. When Lord Robyn began to fade turning for home, Dream On Dream On settled into the stretch with a comfortable lead and maintained a safe advantage over the late-striding Magic Speed.

Talented Prince rallied from near the back of the pack to finish third, 5 1/2 lengths behind Magic Speed. Next came Lord Robyn, followed by Starship Zim, Turk's Ransom, Running Surprise, Captain Lindsay, Favre, Sand Man, and Nicandro.

Dream On Dream On, a son of Untuttable owned by Herb and Ione Elkins, returned $18.80 after covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.64.

"We knew if he broke well he'd be in front, and he can run all day," said Kaplan. "He had a breathing problem, which we fixed, and he's been super ever since, except for the one race at Gulfstream when he got squeezed back."

The Elkinses purchased Dream On Dream On for $50,000 at the OBS March sale.

"I was a little worried about all the speed in the race, especially Lord Robyn," said winning rider Manny Aguilar. "I know we were going pretty fast fractions, but I had a lot of horse all the way around the track."
