Calder: Devil's Disciple by nine

Jim Lisa
Devils Disciple wins the $100,000 Criterium Stakes, the first stakes for 2-year-olds of the Calder season.

MIAMI - Devil's Disciple jumped to the head of the local 2-year-old division with a nine-length victory over Magic Speed in Saturday's $100,000 Criterium Stakes at Calder. B. B. Best, the dominant juvenile on the grounds coming into the race, finished a tiring fourth as the 1-5 favorite.

Devil's Disciple chased B. B. Best and proved no match for that rival when second in the Wynn Dot Comma Stakes on June 6. But jockey Rosemary Homeister Jr. on Devil's Disciple took the race right to B. B. Best in the Criterium. They quickly sprinted clear along the rail, then drew away through the final furlong. Magic Speed rallied along the inside to easily beat the others. B. B. Best raced within easy striking distance of Devil's Disciple and drifted out while laboring badly through the stretch.

Devil's Disciple, a son of Devil His Due, paid $9 as the second choice after covering 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.88 over a fast track. He returned $12.60 to show as a result of B. B. Best finishing off the board.

Devil's Disciple is trained by Joe Waunsch for owner John Somers. He is not eligible for the Florida Stallion Stakes, which begins here Aug. 14.
