Calder: Cellars Shiraz by nine

MIAMI - Rain or shine, turf or dirt, Cellars Shiraz is the top

3-year-old filly in south Florida. She proved that by splashing to an easy nine-length victory over Four Pennies and four other outclassed rivals in the $100,000 Office Queen Stakes at Calder Race Course.

Racing over a sloppy racetrack and in a windswept rain, Cellars Shiraz ($4) sprinted to the front under jockey Cornelio Velasquez, set a moderate pace, then extended her advantage with complete authority once set down entering the stretch. She was under only mild encouragement at the end of 1 1/16 miles in 1:47.49.

Four Pennies made a mild run at the winner around the second turn but proved no match.

Cellars Shiraz, trained by Bill Cesare for the Bitterroot Racing Stable, has now won four straight stakes in south Florida, two of those on turf and the other pair on dirt.

Cesare will now point Cellars Shiraz for the $500,000 American Oaks, a Grade 1 race on the turf at Hollywood Park on July 6.
