Cainam, Frozen Angel top Cyclones

ALTOONA, La. − Cainam and Frozen Angel, winners of their respective sprint divisions, lead a field of 10 in the $75,000 Cyclones Handicap at 1 1/16 miles Saturday at Prairie Meadows. The Cyclones is for Iowa-bred males ages 3 and up.

Cainam is coming off a 1 3/4-length victory in the Grays Lake, a sprint for statebred 3-year-olds.

"He came back perfect," trainer Lynn Chleborad said. "He didn't have to work that hard. That's part of the reason we are running him back quickly. We wanted to keep him short this year, so he wouldn't have to go long short long, but he's pretty smart and handled it real well."

Frozen Angel is coming off a 1 1/2-length victory in the John Wayne, a sprint for older statebreds.

"He is just a better horse physically this year," trainer Mike Natale said. "More weight, better color. He's put on, easily, an additional 200 pounds."

Frozen Angel will try two turns for the first time since running seventh in the Ralph Hayes last year. He will try to give owner Sandra Rasmussen her third stakes win of the meet.

Tiger Lake appears to be peaking at the right time for the race. He earned a career-high 87 Beyer Speed Figure in his return to the route distance with his win over allowance company June 4. Tiger Lake was defeated by Frozen Angel in their two meetings this year, both at six furlongs. The added ground of the Cyclones should benefit him.
