Cactus Cadillac ran down the pace-setting favorite, Henry's Posse, to post her first stakes victory Saturday in the $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky. The second choice in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies, Cactus Cadillack paid $6 after finishing 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:19.45 over Polytrack. Apprentice Ben Creed was aboard for owners Peggy Pate and Gary Mitchell and trainer David Pate. Coming off a series of mile races, the Cactus Ridge filly had just one opponent after a quarter-mile before steadily making up ground with a looping outside run. She will make her next start in the Valdale Stakes, a one-mile race on Feb. 20 at Turfway. Henry's Posse, the 17-10 choice under John McKee, held the lead to the furlong grounds, where Cactus Cadillac took over. She finished 1 3/4 lengths behind the winner and another length before Helen Belen. * Earlier Saturday, jockey Tommy Pompell earned the 2,000th victory of his career when guiding Catch the Prize ($3.80) to a half-length triumph in the second race. Pompell, 36, has been riding professionally since 1996. He rode two winners Friday night at Turfway to draw within one win of the milestone.
