Cabildo Bag: 'What she has you don't train'

Trainer Glenn Delahoussaye is quick to deflect all credit for Cabildo Bag's perfect record. Cabildo Bag, who will shoot for her third straight stakes win in the $50,000 Laurel Lane at Louisiana Downs on Saturday, is one of the top 2-year-olds at Louisiana Downs.

Cabildo Bag won her maiden against statebreds on opening weekend, then stepped up and beat open company in the $50,000 Rebel five weeks later. Cabildo Bag then defeated male rivals in the $50,000 Lafayette at her home track of Evangeline Downs.

Her bid to remain perfect in four starts Saturday makes the Laurel Lane one of the most interesting of the 12 statebred stakes that will make up the $620,000 Louisiana Breeders' Festival.

CSC Stables purchased Cabildo Bag for $35,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Texas 2-year-olds in training sale in March. Her elegant looks and speed first caught the attention of CSC and Delahoussaye, and when she joined their stable, they found she even had more to offer.

"She has the will to win," said Delahoussaye. "She does not like to be beat. She loves to stalk and pounce a horse, and you can't train that. I'd love to take credit, but I'm more her caretaker than her trainer. What she has, you don't train."

Cabildo Bag defeated Crypto's Best two races ago in the Rebel, and Delahoussaye said he was pleased to see Crypto's Best go on to win an allowance and then finish third in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie.

For Cabildo Bag, the goal all meet has been the Laurel Lane, because her connections won this race in 1998 with Sizzlin South. Delahoussaye has given the mount to Josh Romero.

Something must give in Victoria

Miss the first race Saturday and you miss a lot. The Festival begins with an excellent matchup in the $50,000 Victoria between Prized Amberpro, who won four straight statebred stakes last winter, and Leslie's Love, who has won her last two starts.

The six-furlong race for fillies and mares also drew My Meow, who has won 6 of 10 starts in 2003.

Prized Amberpro will be cutting back to one turn for the Victoria, which she won last year before going on to take the $75,000 Distaff at Delta Downs, the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Ladies at Fair Grounds, and the $75,000 Camellia back at Delta.

Trainer John Gelner has given the mount to C.J. Woodley.

Leslie's Love has made her mark as a turf sprinter, but when her race came off the grass last time and she powered to 4 3/4-length win, she came under consideration for the Victoria. Gerard Melancon will ride for trainer Troy Young.

A third Matchmaker for Mrs. Mac?

This is Mrs. Mac's time of year. She always fires big in the $75,000 Walmac Farm Matchmaker for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on turf, a race she has won the past two meets. That's no coincidence, as her trainer, Corale Richards, points for the Breeders' Festival.

Jerri Nichols has the mount on Mrs. Mac, who must beat Jackie's Bidawalk, who has won her last three starts.

* Ten Times Better, one of the best 2-year-old colts this past meet at Evangeline Downs, is looking for his third straight win in the $50,000 Stardust. The colt won a trial race by 12 1/2 lengths two starts ago, then returned to win the $100,000 D.S. "Shine" Young Memorial Futurity in his most recent start July 4.

* Letithappencaptain, who has won two statebred sprint stakes this meet, will make a rare appearance around two turns for the $75,000 Louisiana Breeders' Oaks. In one of her two-turn starts, the filly won the $100,000 Sarah Lane's Oates for statebreds at Fair Grounds.

* Doctor Mike, one of the best Louisiana-bred sprinters in training, and Donna's Mailbag, who has won 5 of his last 6 starts, clash in the $50,000 Cajun. Also in the six-furlong race are Witte Ante, a four-time stakes winner last winter, and Prince Slew, who captured the $150,000 Gold Cup for statebreds at Delta Downs.

* Lac Laronge, who has won stakes in his last two starts, is cross-entered in both the Cajun and the $75,000 Louisiana Breeders' Derby, a 1 1/16-mile race that also drew the promising Donna's Golddigger.
