ELMONT, N.Y. – Bust Another benefitted from a dream trip and made the most of his opportunity, rallying from off a contested pace to a convincing 3 1/4-length victory over Mind Your Biscuits in Monday’s $125,000 Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park.

Bust Another, claimed by trainer Michael Pino for $32,000 in the interests of Bing Cherry Racing this winter at Aqueduct, rated within easy striking distance of the two favorites, Championofthenile (9-5) and Sudden Surprise (2-1), who battled through splits of 22.05 seconds and 44.86 for the opening quarter and half-mile of the seven-furlong Mike Lee.

Championofthenile, who had bobbled leaving the gate, briefly shook free in early stretch but proved no match for the winner. Bust Another readily overtook the tiring leader near the eighth pole and quickly drew off after rallying four wide into the stretch.

Mind Your Biscuits rallied from near the rear of the field to be second, three-parts of a length in front of Championofthenile. Sudden Surprise faltered badly down the stretch and finished seventh in a field of eight 3-year-old New York-breds.

Bust Another, a gelded son of Bustin Stones, completed the distance in 1:23.94 over a muddy track and paid $41.40 for his first stakes win.

“I guess you can say the race unfolded perfectly,” said Pino, who was not in attendance Monday. “At that point, he just had to run. The jockey [Eric Cancel] did a great job. We’ve stuck with him right along, even after we claimed the horse, and it’s been working out well.”

Pino said Bust Another might have had a couple of excuses when finishing fourth, beaten two lengths by Sudden Surprise, in his stakes debut five weeks ago.

“I’m not one for making excuses, but he had the inside that day, which might have had an effect,” said Pino. “I also think I ran him back a little too soon.”
