Business steady overall at Hoosier

Daily average handle remained steady this year at Hoosier Park, the Anderson, Ind., track that concluded a 59-day meet on Saturday. Average daily handle from all sources on Hoosier Park races was $1,773,313, an increase of 1.8 percent over the 2005 meet.

A 2.1 percent increase in wagering on Hoosier races out of state and at Hoosier Park's three offtrack betting facilities in Indiana offset declines in ontrack business. Daily ontrack handle on Hoosier races fell from $52,679 in 2005 to $47,854 this year, a drop of 9.2 percent. Average ontrack attendance also fell 9.2 percent, from 1,178 to 1,070.

Ralph Martinez notched his fourth consecutive Hoosier training title by saddling 57 winners, all for his main client, Louis O'Brien. Martinez was also the leading trainer this year at Indiana Downs, Ellis Park, and Fairmount Park.

Jockey Tom Pompell captured his first Hoosier riding title with 79 wins, eight more than Rodney Prescott, who led the Hoosier standings in 2005.
