Burning Memories seeks to repeat

Burning Memories will take on seven other fillies and mares at six furlongs when she tries to defend her title in Saturday's $40,000 Hoist Her Flag Stakes at Canterbury Park.

A 7-year-old mare owned and trained by James Cranwell, Burning Memories has strung together an impressive record in six seasons of racing. She won her first stakes in the Nebraska Breeders' Debutante Stakes at 2 and built on that form by winning stakes in Nebraska and Minnesota at 5 and 6.

Burning Memories pulled a minor upset in last year's Hoist Her Flag when she held off favored Sarah Jade after a sustained stretch duel. Burning Memories has won 14 of 45 starts and earned more than $213,721. Burning Memories missed by a nose in her most recent outing when second in the Al Swihart Memorial at Fonner Park.

Chicago-based Synco Peach has put together an equally impressive record, winning 7 of 13 career starts. Her first stakes win came in the Powerless Stakes for Illinois-breds at Hawthorne last November. Trained by Percy Scherbenske, Synco Peach demonstrated she could compete in open company when she finished second in the Iowa State Fair Stakes at Prairie Meadows last season.

Others in the field include Chicago shipper Sparkling Sabia, who has captured two of her three starts over the Canterbury strip; Wish for Gold, who ships in from Prairie Meadows after prevailing in an optional claiming race last month; and Two Bayou, who won two high-level claiming races at Saratoga last season.
