Bully Bones captures Sorrento

DEL MAR, Calif. - Bully Bones, unraced since April after a bout with sore shins, overcame a wide trip and a quick pace to win Saturday's $150,000 s at Del Mar.

Bully Bones ($10.20) finished 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:17.36, winning the Grade 3 Sorrento by 1 1-2 lengths over 11-1 Acceleration. Slick Road, an outsider at 41-1, finished third in the field of nine 2-year-olds. Indian Breeze, the 2-1 favorite and the winner of the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park last month, faded to finish eighth.

Bully Bones was always near the front under jockey Rene Douglas. Breaking from post 8, she was a half-length off the lead on the backstretch through early fractions of 21.71 and 44.48 seconds.

While racing wide, Bully Bones took the lead at the quarter pole and won comfortably.

"At the sixteenth pole, I said, 'If she gets tired I can understand it,'" trainer David La Croix said.

By Hesabull, Bully Bones is unbeaten in two starts, having won a maiden race over 4 1-2 furlongs at Hollywood Park in April. She has earned $117,000 for the La Croix family's Meadowbrook Farm, and Gene and Lolli Anderson.
