Bugsy Marrone goes for six straight

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. - Bugsy Marrone ships in from Turf Paradise with a five-race win streak to take on 11 other 2-year-old fillies in the $50,000-added Princess Handicap at Sunland Park on Friday.

Bugsy Marrone has traveled before. She made the first two starts of her career at Santa Anita last spring, both at two furlongs against Cal-breds, and won her second start. She has not been behind at any call in her four races since, while running several sub-45-second half-miles in the process.

Bugsy Marrone's most recent start came in the filly division of the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association Sales Stakes on Oct. 18, when she blazed six furlongs in 1:09.96 to win by 7 1/4 lengths under Mike Ziegler. She won an earlier ATBA Sales Stakes May 18, covering five furlongs in 57.08.

"I bought her as a yearling at Pleasanton last year for $3,200 as a pinhook prospect, but at the ATBA sales she only brought a $4,000 bid, so we kept her," said her trainer, Michael Lenzini. "It turned out to be for the best."

Owned by Gary Marrone, Bugsy Marrone will get a test in the six-furlong Princess. Bugsy Marrone is listed at 7-2 on the morning line, which is set by racing secretary Norm Amundson.

One of Bugsy Marrone's top challengers is Homemaker, who finished third in Keeneland's $100,000 Jesamine County Stakes on the grass last out. A late-runner who might want more distance, Homemaker will need a strong early pace to soften up Bugsy Marrone.

The early threat to Bugsy Marrone could come from from locally based Speedy Falcon, who won a minor stakes at Sun Ray Park on Oct. 26 while making only her third career start. In that race Speedy Falcon ran the half in 44.40 and completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.40. Victor Escobar will ride for trainer Kevin Eikelberry.

Another horse to consider, especially in exotic wagers, is the Steve Asmussen-trained Goodies Galore. Owned by Helligbrodt Racing, Goodies Galore won her maiden at Churchill on July 2, and has since placed in stakes at Prairie Meadows and Louisiana Downs. Goodies Galore is a stalker and jockey Casey Lambert should have her in good position if the front-runners burn each other up.
