Buffythecenterfold takes Sorrento

DEL MAR, Calif. - The 2-year-old filly division in California has not changed in the last five weeks.

In Saturday's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar, the undefeated Buffythecenterfold won her second stakes, beating Tricks Her for the third consecutive race.

At Hollywood Park, the two met in a maiden race on June 15 and the Landaluce Stakes on July 4, with Buffythecenterfold winning both by a length.

In the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes, Buffythecenterfold was on or near the lead throughout, took control at the quarter-pole and was hard ridden to win by three-quarters of a length. Indy Groove finished third in the field of eight 2-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Matt Garcia, Buffythecenterfold ($5.80) ran 6 1-2 furlongs in 1:17.39.

An objection by Patrick Valenzuela, who rode Tricks Her, alleging interference shortly after the start, was disallowed. Tricks Her recovered from the incident to reach contention on the turn.

Buffythecenterfold has earned $182,160 from her three wins. By Capote, she is co-owned by Allen Brian and Stronach Stables. Frank Stronach bought a 70 percent share in Buffythecenterfold on Aug. 6.

The victory made Buffythecenterfold the first filly since Career

Collection in 1997 to win both the Landaluce Stakes and Sorrento Stakes.
