Bubwiser has edge on three rivals

AUBURN, Wash. - Trainers Tim McCanna and Frank Lucarelli, who are involved in a four-way battle for the training title, will both be represented in Friday's feature at Emerald Downs, a mile test for 3-year-old fillies eligible to be claimed for $25,000 to $20,000.

McCanna has the likely favorite in Bubwiser, who won a similar contest two races back, June 27. In that $20,000 claiming affair, Bubwiser defeated Americas Pride, who is one of her foes Friday, by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:39.20 for a mile. Bubwiser came back to finish third to runaway winner Bianconi Baby in an allowance race at a mile July 24, when she outfinished two more of her six rivals Friday. Valley Sunrise ran fourth that day, and Enduring Light was fifth.

Lucarelli will saddle the remaining three fillies in the field. He will send out Amanda Marie, who is coming off back-to-back wins over $15,000 company; The Known Q, who defeated $15,000 rivals in her last start; and Slews Mystery, who graduated on the $25,000 level in her most recent outing. None of the Lucarelli trainees will race coupled owing to separate ownership.

The sleeper in Friday's field may be Enduring Light. Though she was outfinished by Bubwiser when making her route debut July 24, Enduring Light was beaten less than two lengths after racing extremely wide on both turns. Enduring Light defeated $25,000 rivals going 6 1/2 furlongs earlier in the meet and appears to be a solid fit under Friday's conditions.
