Bubble bursts for Raylene

EDMONTON, Alberta - Entering Sunday's $40,000 Chariot Chaser at Northlands Park, an undefeated season and perhaps even an appearance in the Canadian Derby looked possible for 3-year-old filly sensation Raylene. But those hopes were dashed when Raylene, unbeaten in three previous starts this year, finished a dull second in the Chariot Chaser to 9-1 shot A Shaky Start.

Jockey Perry Winters urged Raylene through the final turn of the 6 1/2-furlong Chariot Chaser, and she managed to work her way along the rail and into position at the head of the stretch. Nevertheless, she couldn't make up any distance down the lane and finished two lengths back. The highweight at 123 pounds, Raylene gave up at least six pounds to the field.

The next race for Raylene, a Kentucky-bred, will likely be the $40,000 Northlands Oaks at one mile on July 20.

* On Tuesday, Canada Day, Northlands featured the $40,000 Western Canada for 3-year-olds.

With Taiaslew taking the day off, the Kentucky-bred Rindanica took advantage, powering through the final turn to take the lead at the head of the lane and win by 2 3/4 lengths.

Trained by Riley Rycroft, Rindanica will probably meet Canadian Derby favorite Taiaslew in the $40,000 Ky Alta at 1 1/16 miles here July 18.

- Although the "no vacancy" sign has been hung out at the stable area here, with over 1,110 Thoroughbreds on hand, race officials are still having difficulty putting together full cards. Also, most of the stakes divisions lack depth this year, resulting in a decline in nominations.
