Bruanna wins fifth in a row

Bruanna extended her winning streak to five races by capturing Monday's $59,100 Veiled Look Stakes at Delaware Park.

The 4-year-old Bruanna, claimed by trainer Mike Gorham for $35,000 in mid-June, is undefeated since Anthony Black became her regular rider. Black said the filly is finally learning how to relax and ration her speed.

"They said she always had a lot of speed, but she would run and kind of stagger during the later part of races," Black said. "I guess as she has matured she has figured out that she can get a deep breath and relax."

Bruanna stalked the early pace in the six-furlong Veiled Look, opened up a clear lead when Black asked her to move, and finished a length in front of runner-up Urban Dancer, the 3-2 favorite. Her winning time was 1:10.61 over a fast track.

Gorham said Bruanna, now 10 for 24 in her career, could return on Sept. 7 for the Endine Stakes, a race where she would likely have to face champion filly Xtra Heat. Gorham indicated he will see how Bruanna comes out of the race before committing to the Endine.
