Brother Derek retired to stud

Brother Derek, a two-time Grade 1 winner, has retired from racing and will enter stud in 2009 at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Ky. A 5-year-old Benchmark horse, he does not yet have a stud fee.

Bred in California by Mary H. Caldwell, Brother Derek sold for $150,000 at the 2004 Keeneland September yearling sale, where John Brocklebank bought him as a resale prospect. Brocklebank sold him at the Barretts March sale, where he brought $275,000 from Cecil Peacock, who raced him.

He scored Grade 1 victories in the 2005 Hollywood Futurity and the 2006 Santa Anita Derby. He retires with $1,611,138 in earnings from 6 wins in 17 starts. He also was fourth in the 2006 Kentucky Derby and Preakness.

Dan Hendricks trained Brother Derek, who missed a year of racing after undergoing surgery to remove an ankle chip in early 2007. He returned to take second in a Santa Anita allowance in April in his last race.

Brother Derek is out of the unraced Siyah Kalem mare Miss Soft Sell, making him a full brother to multiple stakes-winner Don'tsellmeshort and a half-brother to stakes-placed Swissle Stick.
