Brother Derek, Barbaro gallop

It was a relatively quiet Friday morning at Churchill Downs with none of the 15 Derby horses stabled here putting in workouts. Probable Derby favorite Brother Derek and the undefeated Barbaro did visit the racetrack for the first time, both galloping after the renovation break.

Barbaro, who vanned here Thursday afternoon from Keeneland, looked very strong galloping 1 3/4 miles under exercise rider Peter Brette. Meanwhile, Brother Derek, who flew in from California, went a more subdued 1 1/4 miles under Luis Ortega, alongside his stable pony.

With rain in the forecast for late Saturday and early Sunday, many trainers are altering their schedules to put in their final workouts on Saturday instead of Sunday. Trainer Todd Pletcher plans to work his trio of Derby candidates Bluegrass Cat, Keyed Entry and Sunriver on Saturday. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was to van Jazil and Flashy Bull from Keeneland to Churchill on Friday afternoon for Saturday workouts. Others expected to work Saturday are Sweetnorthernsaint, Lawyer Ron, Sharp Humor, Sinister Minister, Steppenwolfer, and possibly Barbaro.

Meanwhile, three Kentucky Oaks fillies put in workouts on Friday. Itty Bitty Pretty worked six furlongs in 1:17, Quiet Kim also worked six furlongs in 1:12.80, and Top Knotch Lady went five furlongs in 1:01.
