Bright Sky starts '03 in Ispahan

Email

Bright Sky faces seven males in the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp on Sunday to begin a season that is filled with promise.

The winner of last year's French Oaks, Bright Sky concluded her 3-year-old French campaign for trainer Elie Lellouche with a four-length romp in the Prix de l'Opera before an unplaced effort in the Japan Cup. The Prix d'Ispahan is run at 1 1/8 miles and 55 yards, to which she is ideally suited.

On the face of it, Falbrav should get the best of Bright Sky, as he won the Japan Cup, beating her by 9 1/4 lengths. But Bright Sky is the choice, because Falbrav, a three-time Group 1 winner last year and third in the Prix Ganay April 27, would prefer a longer distance.

Dandoun, conqueror of Domedriver in the one-mile Group 2 Prix du Muguet on May 1, could last for a place in the frame.

Hi Dubai carries Godolphin's colors in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary on the same card. A full sister to Fantastic Light, she was a sharp winner of the listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket and is using this traditional French Oaks prep as a springboard to the English Oaks. She will be tested by recent Group 3 winners Campsie Fells and Humouresque.
