Breen has high hopes for Bickersons

Trainer Kelly Breen said the excitable nature of the 2-year-old filly Bickersons made it tough to train her as hard as he needed to get her fit for a Grade 1 race. In the last few weeks, however, Breen has thrown caution to the wind and has picked up the training regimen with the filly. Or, as he put it Wednesday: "It's no holds barred for the Breeders' Cup."

Bickersons was one of 12 pre-entered for the $1 million Juvenile Fillies, to be run at Santa Anita on Nov. 6. Perhaps more than any other year, the 26th edition of the Juvenile Fillies appears to be wide open. Bickersons, a daughter of Silver Deputy, has just a maiden win from four starts, but she finished third in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga and, most recently, finished third to Blind Luck - the probable Juvenile Fillies favorite - in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf at Santa Anita.

Since the Oak Leaf on Oct. 4, Bickersons has remained in Southern California where she has breezed twice over the Pro-Ride surface. She is expected to complete her preparations with one more work Friday.

"She's a hyper filly, and I didn't want to turn the screws too tight on her," Breen said. "I'm turning the screws on her now, and she's giving me all she has. I'm looking for a big performance on Breeders' Cup Day like I never had to ask from her before.''

In the Oak Leaf, Bickersons made a run at the leaders at the quarter pole before fading in the final sixteenth.

"She ran a great race," Breen said. "She flew in the night before from New Jersey to California. Coming down the stretch, she looked a little bit like a tired horse. Other than getting tired, I thought she proved she belongs with that caliber horse."

With riders, the Juvenile Fillies field when drawn on Tuesday should include: Always a Princess (Garrett Gomez), Beautician (Robby Albarado), Bickersons (Joel Rosario), Biofuel (Eric Da Silva), Blind Luck (Tyler Baze), Champagne d'Oro (Martin Garcia), Connie and Michael (Kent Desormeaux), Devil May Care (John Velazquez), Ms Vanenzz (Joe Rocco Jr.), Negligee (Rajiv Maragh), She Be Wild (Julien Leparoux), and Zilva (Jeremy Rose).
