Breeds clash in James Smith

The return of the stakes-tested Quarter Horse Shy Anns Trust and several Thoroughbreds stepping up in class make for a wide-open $25,000 James Smith Handicap at 870 yards on Friday at Los Alamitos.

Shy Anns Trust is returning from a nine-month layoff for the Smith. A 7-year-old gelding, he won the Laguna Hills Handicap last year and followed that with third-place finishes in his last four starts before his extended layoff.

Sun City Bradley, a Thoroughbred, has won three straight races - two claiming races and a conditioned allowance.

Tomcolee, another Thoroughbred, was second in the Moonshiner in January and comes off a win at the $12,500 claiming level.
