Breeding that fairly yells turf

ALBANY, Calif. - A look at Positivelycharming's family tree may tell more about her chances Thursday at Golden Gate Fields than a look at her previous races.

Positivelycharming returns to Northern California for her second start on the turf in a 1 1/16- mile maiden race for fillies and mares. She has five rivals.

But none has her lineage. A $600,000 Keeneland yearling purchase in September 2005, Positivelycharming was bred in the purple, by Pulpit out of the multiple turf stakes winner Charm a Gendarme. She's a half-sister to Tout Charmant, who won more than $1 million on turf alone, not to mention Forest Grove, a multiple stakes winner on turf.

All five of her siblings have won on turf, and she could make it a perfect 6 for 6 for her dam.

In her last start and her first turf try, Positivelycharming set the pace March 22 at Bay Meadows before fading to second. She was a bit rank under jockey Danny Sorenson and expended too much energy early.

"She's a little bit headstrong," said trainer Paddy Gallagher, who has been trying to get the 3-year-old Positivelycharming to calm down a bit.

She hasn't raced for seven weeks, which, Gallagher said, was not entirely by design.

"We did enter her a couple times, but didn't get in," he said. "We've just been waiting for a race on the turf."

Positivelycharming has a second and a third in three career starts. She debuted on the Cushion Track at Hollywood Park in November and ran third, then finished eighth at Santa Anita in January. Both races were sprints.

"So far, she seems a little better on the turf," Gallagher said. "Her whole pedigree seems to show that."

Positivelycharming isn't the only runner in Thursday's feature with strong turf credentials.

Diva's Seastar is a half-sister to multiple turf stakes winners Elusive Diva and R Baggio as well as to Handyman Bill, who beat turf standout Ninebanks in a turf stakes at Bay Meadows. No Lullaby, another sibling, was a six-figure earner on turf.

Both Little Diesel and Arranged Marriage have siblings that have won on turf, and Little Diesel has a runner-up finish on turf after setting the pace.
