Winchester has been withdrawn from consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Turf, leaving the $3 million race with a prospective field of nine heading into entry day on Monday.
Trainer Christophe Clement did not immediately respond for a comment, but a Breeders’ Cup official confirmed Saturday afternoon that Winchester would not be entered in the Turf. Winchester worked a half-mile on turf Saturday at Belmont in 50.62 seconds. His most recent race, the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic on Oct. 1, was poor, with Winchester finishing last of five while beaten more than 19 lengths on a very wet Belmont grass course.
Six-year-old Winchester, bred and owned by Mrs. Bertram R. Firestone, finished fourth in the 2010 BC Turf and was sixth in the race’s 2008 edition.
Best Bets
SWEET MARINI should win this sprint for California N1X fillies and mares at a short price. The lightly raced gray ran super one month ago in a two-turn stakes; she set all the pace but was collared in deep stretch. It was just her third start, and her first around two turns. Now she shortens in distance, drops in class, and can be gone late at odds-on. ZUZU'S PETALS came out firing in her debut, winning a by a length and a half over a filly (Tribal Chatter) that returned Thursday to win a maiden race.
