Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint: Eddie D likely to produce several starters

Chips All In edges Boat Trip to win the Eddie D at Santa Anita last Friday.

Last Friday’s Eddie D Stakes could yield multiple starters for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. This should come as no surprise considering the Eddie D was run on Santa Anita’s unique about 6 1/2-furlong downhill turf course, the same course this Turf Sprint will be decided on. Good downhill form has been a harbinger of success in past Turf Sprints run at Santa Anita.

Chips All In prevailed by a nose in the Eddie D to improve his career downhill record to four wins and a second from five starts. However, Chips All In’s connections must now decide whether to supplement their colt to the Turf Sprint, as he is not Breeders’ Cup nominated.

The three who followed Chips All In across the line in the Eddie D – Boat Trip, Unbridled’s Note, and Caracortado – are all eligible to the Breeders’ Cup and are interesting contenders.

Boat Trip ran his best race to date in the Eddie D, while Unbridled’s Note, who finished a close second in last year’s Turf Sprint at Santa Anita, was making his first start in nearly five months on Friday. Caracortado was coming off an even longer layoff of almost 21 months, so he also certainly has a license to improve.
