Breeders' Cup Turf: Romans still torn between two races for Little Mike
Email
ARCADIA, Calif.- Trainer Dale Romans has not ruled out a start in the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 for Little Mike, the winner of the Arlington Million in August.
Little Mike is pre-entered for the BC Mile and BC Turf, with the Mile as his first preference.
Romans said on Saturday that he wants to study the BC Turf, notably the pace scenario, before making a final decision.
“I think we’re 60-40 for the Mile,” he said. “It will be about who is going in each race and the speed scenario.”

Owned by Priscilla Vaccarezza, Little Mike, 5, has won 11 of 20 starts and $1,454,412. The Arlington Million is his most prestigious victory, but the gelding also won the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on the Kentucky Derby undercard on May 5. In his last start, Little Mike was fifth on yielding turf in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park on Sept. 29.
The turf course will be firm at Santa Anita next weekend, regardless of which race is chosen for Little Mike.
Saturday at Santa Anita, Bourbon Bay worked six furlongs in 1:13.40 on turf in company with stablemate Fire With Fire.
A 6-year-old, Bourbon Bay has won six turf stakes at Santa Anita in his career. He would be a longshot in the Grade 1 BC Turf, a race led by Point of Entry, a four-time stakes winner this year.

Dale wake up and smell the coffee. U might hit the board in the mile. POE already whipped u in the mile an ahalf, so whats there to wonder about?

Hey connections of lil mike in case u guyz didn't get the memo, obviously will get in and obliviously will smoke wise dan and everyone else that enters the gate in the mile

He's got no shot in either race so who cares.

Dale.. don't be stubborn. Little Mike is not a Grade 1, 12 furlong horse. Put him in the mile where he belongs and let the chips fall where they may.

Best Bets
AQUINNAH returns to a route and she couldn't have found a much better spot as a horse who wants to be involved early, as the expected pace scenario figures to favor those runners with a little early zip and she appears to be quickest of them all out of the gate; should control the tempo, and that should lead to her running to her best figures. CHARMINGMEGAN has tactical speed and likes to win, a combination that makes her easy to like; should get first run at the top pick.
