Jeranimo, winning the Oak Tree Mile, pleased trainer Mike Pender with his workout Saturdayat Santa Anita in preparation for the Breedres' Cup Mile.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jeranimo won the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile at Santa Anita on Oct. 8 to justify a trip to Churchill Downs for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile.

In the BC Mile, Jeranimo will face a field that will include the French-based Goldikova, who has won the last three runnings; the former American champion Gio Ponti; and Strong Suit, a highly-promising invader from England.

Jeranimo’s trainer, Mike Pender, knows the quality of the opposition and thinks his 5-year-old horse fits with that group.

“I’m afraid he does and that’s what’s scary,” Pender said.

Owned by B.J. Wright, Jeranimo has won 6 of 22 starts and $660,400. Saturday at Santa Anita, Jeranimo had his final workout before the BC Mile, going a half-mile in 50 seconds.

“He was full of run,” Pender said. “It’s the perfect situation.”

Jeranimo was one of eight Breeders’ Cup pre-entrants to work at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park.

Amazombie, bound for the BC Sprint, worked six furlongs in 1:00.40. The winner of the Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes on Oct. 8, Amazombie was timed galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.60, according to track clockers.

Trainer Bill Spawr said that Amazombie worked the final quarter-mile in 23.40 seconds.

Dubawi Heights, who won the Grade 1 Yellow Ribbon Stakes on Oct. 1 in her final race before the BC Filly and Mare Turf, worked a half-mile in 50.60 seconds. She had worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds on Oct. 22, which trainer Simon Callaghan considered to be a more important workout.

“She’d done her main bit,” Callaghan said. Saturday’s work “was just a matter of keeping her ticking over.”

The 2-year-old filly My Gi Gi worked a half-mile in 47.80 seconds. She starts in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday, preceded by a fourth in the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes on Oct. 2.

The 2-year-old colt Majestic City breezed five furlongs on turf in 1:03.80. He is pre-entered for the Juvenile and Juvenile Turf. Self Preservation, pre-entered for the Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile Fillies Turf, worked five furlongs in 1:00 on the main track.

Tres Borrachos, who has been pre-entered for the BC Dirt Mile, worked five furlongs in 1:02 at Hollywood Park. Tres Borrachos was fifth in the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1. He won the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar in July.

Trainer Marty Jones said last week that Tres Borrachos will start in the BC Dirt Mile or the Ack Ack Handicap at Churchill Downs on Friday.

Mr. Commons, second to Jeranimo in the Oak Tree Mile, worked five furlongs in 1:00.40. A 3-year-old searching for his first graded stakes win, Mr. Commons will be a longshot in the BC Mile.
