Power, the winner of two group stakes this year in England and Ireland, will attempt to solidify his status as a leading contender for the 2012 English 2000 Guineas in Saturday’s Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, England.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Power will be favored in the Dewhurst, which is run over seven furlongs for colts and fillies and carries a purse of approximately $462,000. The race is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge program, offering a fees-paid berth to the BC Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5 to the winner.

A colt by Oasis Dream, Power made a successful trip to England in June, winning the Group 2 Coventry Stakes over six furlongs at Royal Ascot. After finishing second by a neck to La Collina in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Aug. 7, Power rebounded to win the Group 1 National Stakes over seven furlongs on Sept. 10.

Bronterre, another Oasis Dream colt, is a threat to Power in the nine-runner Dewhurst. Trained by Richard Hannon, Bronterre is unbeaten in two starts in England, including the listed Peter Willett Stakes over seven furlongs at Goodwood on Sept. 10.

There are two Group 1 races and two Group 2 races on an outstanding seven-race program at Newmarket on Saturday. The card also features the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes for 2-year-old colts over six furlongs drew a field of 16.

Family One, a two-time stakes winner in France in July, makes his first start in England in the Middle Park. In his last race, Family One was second to the unbeaten Dabirsim in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville, France, on Aug. 21. Dabirsim followed that performance with a win in the Group 1 Prix Jean Luc-Lagardere Grand Criterium last Sunday at Longchamp.

In the Middle Park Stakes, Family One must beat Casper Netscher, the winner of the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on Sept. 17, and Bapak Chinta, who is unbeaten in two starts, but has not started since winning the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

At the start of the program, the Hannon-trained Strong Suit will be a heavy favorite in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes over seven furlongs. Strong Suit won two Group 3 races earlier this year, including the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Group 2 Rockfel Stakes for 2-year-old fillies over seven furlongs may be a showdown between Pimpernel and Sunday Times, who are making quick turnarounds, having raced at Newmarket on Sept. 24

Pimpernel won the Jersey Lily Fillies’ Nursery over seven furlongs, her third career win. On the same program, Sunday Times was second in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes over six furlongs, finishing a half-length behind Lightening Pearl.
