Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf: Among Euros, Waterway Run is in, Certify is out

Although Spring Venture won the Natalma, a Win and You're In for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, she is still under consideration for the BC Juvenile Fillies.

The Godolphin-owned Certify romped in the latest Win and You’re In stakes, the Group 1 Shadwell Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket on Sept. 28, but her connections have indicated that the unbeaten filly will likely be put away for the year.

Certify was reluctantly loaded into the gate with a blindfold, and then broke slowly before closing along the rail to win going away over a straight course.

Waterway Run captured the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes over seven furlongs on the same Newmarket card, and is BC-bound, according to trainer Ralph Beckett.

Said Beckett: “She will go to straight to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf because she was nominated for it as a foal, and that seems the next logical step. She is very laid back, and traveling wouldn’t be a problem for her.”

The unbeaten Spring Venture competes on Polytrack for the first time Saturday in the Grade 3, 1 1/16-mile Mazarine Stakes at Woodbine. Spring Venture was an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Natalma Stakes, an important Win and You’re In race going a mile around one turn over Woodbine’s expansive turf course Sept. 15.

Watsdachances has been aimed towards Sunday’s Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont, since she took the P.G. Johnson Stakes on the grass at Saratoga. The Grade 3 Miss Grillo is part of the Win and You’re In program.

Nancy O, a troubled third in the Natalma, was to be entered in both the 1 1/16-mile Miss Grillo and the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont on Saturday. If the track is sloppy, trainer Carolyn Costigan said she will scratch Nancy O from the Frizette, in favor of the Miss Grillo.

The final Win and You’re in event is the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile route at Keeneland on Oct. 11. It is expected to attract Always Kitten, who was victorious in the Happy Ticket Stakes at Louisiana Downs.

Santa Anita’s turf prep for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf is Monday’s $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes. Among those nominated is Renee’s Queen, who was scratched from last Saturday’s Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes. Trained by Eric Guillot, Renee’s Queen took the one-mile Oak Tree Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar as a 30-1 outsider.
