Breeders' Cup: Excaper heading to Juvenile Turf

Email

Trainer Ian Black said he plans to pre-enter Grade 3 Summer Stakes runner-up Excaper in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and the son of hot sire Exchange Rate could be the pacemaker in the one-mile event.

After setting moderate fractions in the one-mile Summer at Woodbine on Sept. 17, Excaper gave way grudgingly to finish three-quarters of a length behind the heavily favored Finale. He went on to finish a fading fourth as the favorite in the Grade 3 Grey Stakes, over 1 1/16 miles on the Polytrack.

The connections of Shkspeare Shaliyah and Lucky Chappy both announced that they will supplement them to the race, at a cost of $100,000 apiece.

After missing the break, Lucky Chappy was a fast-closing third when making his North American debut in the Grade 3 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 9. If he makes it into the field, he would be one of two starters owned by Team Valor International, along with State of Play, who took the Grade 2 With Anticipation, a Win and You’re In stakes at Saratoga. Team Valor won last year’s BC Juvenile Turf with Pluck.

Prominent Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien will run a horse to be determined in the race, according to assistant T.J. Comerford, who was at Woodbine last weekend for the Grade 1 Canadian International. O’Brien sent out the talented Power to capture a Win and You’re In race in Ireland.
