Breeders' Cup Classic: Fort Larned has final breeze

Barbara D. Livingston
Fort Larned, shown training earlier this fall, breezed five furlongs Monday ahead of Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic.

Fort Larned, seeking to defend his title in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Santa Anita, worked five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Monday at Churchill Downs, his final prep for the race.

Brian Hernandez Jr., the regular rider for Fort Larned, was aboard. The horse worked by himself.

"Everything's good. It was a nice work," said Ian Wilkes, who trains Fort Larned. "He came back happy. He wanted to do more."

Fort Larned is scheduled to fly to California on Tuesday. He was among 12 horses expected to be entered Monday in the Classic. Post positions for the race are scheduled to be drawn at 4 p.m. Pacific on Monday. The draw can be seen live on HRTV.

Fort Larned is another top handicap horse who is inconsistent. He threw a real clunker several times in the past year, costing the big bettors many hundreds of thousands of $$$!!!

Like this horse he is FAST way to dangerous not to bet, but his inconsistency should up his odds. This front loaded race will be interesting I think he is going to battle the dude if there were truly a top notch closer (not sure of declaration of war's running style) I would be licking my lips at their chances. No ronthegreek doesn't count he had his one hit wonder for the year

Careful !!! He was trained ala Secretariat when he won by all those lengths in the Belmont stakes. (repeated hard works). It worked for the Big Red then , we'll see about Fort Larned now. This is no Secretariat though, or any horse by all means. His conexions are also following the exact same previous race pattern as his win last year in the BC Classic, and those who think there is going to be too much pace in this race in detriment of Fort Larned, have to realize that this is the way he likes it most. So, do not let the Game on Dude hoopla , that begins today and will increase during the following weekdays, affect your handicapping criteria.

cant wait for the draw, im just feeling this will be paynters last race and retire as the champ that he is. really feeling good baffert did not enter him in the mile and decided to go against the dude. how many times has baffert had 2 and the longer odds horse won. paynbters last was so much better than it looked, just a great prep for the classic

I have a feeling he'll be overlooked once again on the tote board come Classic post time, but he's got as much a shot as anyone. Don't think they'll let him run loose on the lead this time though...will be an interesting chess match, can't wait!
