Email

DRF.com handicapping editor Dan Illman, author of "Betting Maidens and 2-Year-Olds," takes an in-depth approach to juvenile racing every year at Saratoga and Keeneland in his DRF Plus columns, Spa Babies and Keeneland Babies.

Drew off late without feeling the sting of the whip...Tries two turns for the first time in the Breeders' Cup, but has enough pedigree to get the trip...Looms a logical contender.

J. B.'S THUNDER (Thunder Gulch - Rebridled Dreams, by Unbridled's Song)
Trainer: Albert Stall Jr.

Foaled February 6, 2008 in Kentucky...Sold for $42,000 as a yearling (Keeneland, September 2009)...Sire was a multiple Grade 1 route winner (16-9-2-2, $2,915,086, 8-13 in main track routes, 0-2 in wet)...Dam was a stakes-winner (20-4-1-1, $134,663, 3-9 in main track routes, unraced in wet)...Dam a half-brother to stakes-placed sprinter STORMIN BRIGADE (14-2-4-1, $56,881, 0-1 in main track routes, unraced in wet)...Hasn't been headed in two career starts...Went gate-to-wire over speed-favoring Saratoga turf course to win career debut at 7-1 odds...May have been aided by speed-biased polytrack on October 9 when winning the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland...Will probably have to go faster in the early portion of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile if he is to secure the lead, and may have to prove his mettle from off the pace.

J P'S GUSTO (Successful Appeal - Call Her Magic, by Caller I.D.)

Seemed tired in the final furlong when switching back to his wrong lead and failed to contain Jaycito's late surge...Questionable at this distance.

UNCLE MO (Indian Charlie - Playa Maya, by Arch)
Trainer: Todd Pletcher

Foaled March 10, 2008 in Kentucky...Sold for $160,000 as a weanling (Keeneland, November 2008)...Sold for $220,000 as a yearling (Keeneland, September 2009)...Sire was a Grade 1 route winner (5-4-0-1, $616,120, 2-3 in main track routes, 1-1 in wet)...Dam was multiple stakes-placed (6-3-1-2, $81,921, 1-3 in main track routes, 0-1 in wet)...Female family of Grade 3 route winner WOODS OF WINDSOR (18-2-7-2, $197,132, 2-6 in main track routes, 0-1 in wet)...Arguably the most impressive juvenile winner of the boutique Saratoga summer meeting as he earned a 102 Beyer going gate-to-wire over a speed-friendly surface in his debut on August 28. Backed that race up with another good-looking win in the one-mile, Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont...Talented, but has questions to answer, namely two turns and pace...He's fast, but may have to sit off another rival early.
