Jockey Luis Contreras and Breaking Money win the Seagram Cup Stakes on Monday at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario — Breaking Lucky, last year’s Prince of Wales Stakes winner, wore down even-money favorite Are You Kidding Me in the stretch to win the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes on Monday at Woodbine.

With Luis Contreras aboard for the first time, Breaking Lucky ($11.90) stalked in third on the backstretch, as Royal Son set moderate fractions, with Are You Kidding Me in close proximity.

Breaking Lucky mounted a wide bid on the far turn. He then joined Are You Kidding Me up front early in the stretch, before edging away late to win by three-quarters of a length, in a time of 1:42.70.

Melmich rallied wide to finish another neck back in third, and Royal Son faded to fourth in the seven-horse field.

Breaking Lucky, a son of Lookin At Lucky, banked $108,000 of the $168,600 purse for Gunpowder Farm and trainer Reade Baker.

“I was very happy the whole way,” Contreras said. “I just sat behind the speed. Reade told me to kick before everybody made their move.”
