Tom Boyko won a $5,000 seat to the World Championship of Handicapping this weekend on DRF Tournaments. Boyko finished with $84 in a field of 11 entries, and now he’ll have a shot to win his share of the $1 million (assuming full participation of 200 entries) on offer in the no-takeout WCH Finals. Boyko had managed just two collections in the first seven contest events but caught fire from there, connecting in four of the last five. After getting place points from Hofburg ($7) in the Florida Derby, he was still very much on the outside looking in. But he’d done well enough to that point that the $39.40 he got back from Infuriated Gary was enough to land him in the top spot. Qualifying for Keeneland’s Grade 1 Gamble was once again a popular activity on DRF Tournaments this weekend with qualifiers on both Saturday and Sunday. The Grade 1 Gamble is a live-bankroll contest that takes place at the storied Lexington oval on Sunday, April 15. On Saturday, Anthony “ATM” Mattera seemingly strafed the field in a 10-runner event. His total of $102.60 was nearly $40 clear of his closest pursuer, Gary McMaster. But the actual contest was much closer than that. Mattera didn’t do much during the meat of the contest: in the middle 10 races he had only two collections, both under $10. But he started and finished brilliantly, opening the curtain with Outback Bob ($45.40) in Gulfstream’s ninth and closing it with Infuriated Gary. Without those additional $39.40 points, McMaster – who had just one collection with capper Lightning Dove – would have prevailed. In Sunday’s Keeneland contest, Dan Peltz won the day. He chipped away early with three small collections in the first five before finding $55.40 in the form of Shy Carmelita in Santa Anita’s sixth race. He backed that up in the very next Santa Anita race with $29.60 from Wandering Patrol. In the end, he was just over $10 clear of second-place finisher Brian Ivery in the contest, which was limited to 10 entries. Also on Sunday, Sarah Wiener won her way into Monmouth’s Pick Your Prize contest, a popular live-bank event that will take place on Saturday, June 2. A field of 29 was attracted for the contest and Wiener’s $104.40 was $14.60 clear. She got points in half of the 12 races with the biggest winners being Todos Santos ($26) in Santa Anita’s fifth and Shy Carmelita. Tournament action returns to DRFT on Wednesday with lots of opportunities for horseplayers. DRFT is the only place where you can win into the upcoming World Horseplayers’ Tour/Santa Anita Preakness Challenge, a live-bank event with all the prize money added that will be filmed for a television pilot. Players also want to be aware of a free roll contest happening this weekend. On Friday night, Sky Racing World is a presenting a chance to win a free VIP trip to the Everest this fall. The online contest will take place on April 6 and April 13 in conjunction with The Championships, a series of 12 championship-level races happening at Australia’s Royal Randwick. Players interested in getting more information about the races and horses competing in The Championships are encouraged to join in for a free handicapping session Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET where Australian form expert Jason Witham will join me for an overview of the two racing cards. You can sign up here. The handicapping session will also be archived at drf.com/youtube. For more information, go to tournaments.drf.com.
