Bourbon Courage, winner of the Super Derby in September and most recently third behind Shackleford in the Clark Handicap in November, is a “very good possibility” to make his next start in the Grade 1, $500,000 Donn Handicap on Feb. 9 at Gulfstream Park.
Trainer Kellyn Gorder had seriously considered Bourbon Courage for the $100,000 Louisiana Handicap at Fair Grounds, where the 4-year-old colt has been training in recent weeks. The Louisiana Handicap is set for next Saturday, Jan. 19.
“We don’t want to run in both races,” Gorder said. “The horse is doing so good right now that we feel like maybe it’s time to take a shot at the big race.”
Bourbon Courage, by Lion Heart, races for Bourbon Lane Stable, a Kentucky-based partnership managed by Jamie Hill and Mike McMahon. He has earned nearly $660,000 in eight career starts, with all three of his wins coming from three starts in Louisiana.
It looks like Mucho Macho Man will target the Donn after the Sunshine Millions. With Ron the Greek and Flat Out looming in the wings Bourbon Courage might get third...

This is a nice, under the radar, kind of horse. Could have a good year.

MOST HAPPY FELLA, reclaimed from last, drops to easier spot after setting pressured pace vs. odds-on Pinball; both wins last year came on this track. ARTIE LUVSTO PARTY has a knack for surprises, with three lifetime wins coming at 33-1, 17-1 & 11-1 (two on this track); entrymate EQUIVOCATION gets major rider switch first off a claim. PURE ATTITUDE among top 3 in wins & earnings and snug fit to date clause.
