Larry Bortstein, a turf writer for the Orange County Register, died on Sunday, according to Santa Anita's publicity department. He was 67. Bortstein was hospitalized on Jan. 23 after suffering a pulmonary embolism, according to a statement released by the racetrack. He was on life support until his death. A contributing writer to the California Thoroughbred magazine in recent years, Bortstein was a native New York who worked at Centennial Park in Denver before moving to California. He also worked for a period in Santa Anita publicity.
