Borrego having ankle surgery, out till summer

The spring-summer campaign for Borrego has been postponed and will become a summer-fall campaign that will now begin in late July. Trainer Beau Greely said Tuesday that Borrego would undergo arthroscopic surgery Friday for a chip in his right ankle, and that he would not run again until the Del Mar meet.

Borrego, 5, burst to prominence at Del Mar last summer by winning the Grade 1 Pacific Classic, followed by a blowout victory at Belmont Park in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Greely said Borrego would tack-walk for 30 to 40 days after the surgery and would stay at Hollywood Park during his recovery.

Borrego, who has won five races and earned more than $2 million from 20 starts, will enter stud at the conclusion of this year.

"We'll get him back, try to get him ready for the Pacific Classic, and have a summer-fall campaign with him."

Greely said Borrego showed signs of discomfort after galloping last week at Hollywood, and X-rays revealed a chip that he said "is not substantial."
