Borel rides his 4,000th winner


Jockey Calvin Borel won the 4,000th race of his career on Wednesday at Oaklawn Park when he captured the with first-time starter Jet Angel ($9.60), trained by Randy Morse. Borel's mount raced along the rail, fought a stretchlong duel with Thisisyourday, and won by a neck.

"Coming to the wire, I thought I had the other horse," said Borel, 38. "What was running through my mind was, 'This is it. This is it.' "

Borel, 38, became the 44th rider in history to win 4,000 races. He had 26,871 career mounts through Oaklawn's sixth race Wednesday, with purse earnings of $72,331,613.

Borel is a two-time riding title winner at Oaklawn, and he won the 3,000th race of his career there in 1999. He has also won riding titles at Churchill Downs, Turfway Park, Ellis Park, Louisiana Downs, Evangeline Downs, and Delta Downs. A Louisiana native, he won his first race in that state, at Delta on Jan. 14, 1983.
