Calvin Borel hopes to recover from a broken jaw sustained in a spill in Saturday's Delta Downs Jackpot in time for the opening of Oaklawn Park's meet in mid-January.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Calvin Borel sustained a broken jaw in a Saturday spill at Delta Downs and will be sidelined five or six weeks, agent Jerry Hissam told Churchill Downs officials Sunday

Borel incurred the injury when his mount in the $1 million Delta Jackpot, Aces N Kings, threw him. Borel then was kicked by a trailing horse.

Borel returned Saturday evening to Louisville, where he was to undergo surgery Sunday.

Hissam said he is optimistic Borel will be ready to return when Oaklawn Park starts its 2011 meet on Jan. 14. Borel typically takes off much of the time between the end of the Churchill fall meet through the start of Oaklawn anyway.

Borel was at Delta in Vinton, La., to ride in several races on the card. Borel, 44, has won an unprecedented three of the last four runnings of the Kentucky Derby.
