Bonnie Miss rivals meet again

MIAMI, Fla. - In their only previous meeting, nearly six months ago at Gulfstream Park, Halo Reality and Happily Unbridled finished second and third in the Grade 2 Bonnie Miss Stakes. On Saturday, the pair will square off once again, for a more modest purse, in the $50,000 Judy's Red Shoes Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies at Calder.

Halo Reality and Happily Unbridled have both been lightly raced since the Bonnie Miss.

Halo Reality has started just once since chasing home front-running winner Tap Dance in the Bonnie Miss, finishing a dull 10th in Oaklawn Park's Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes on April 13. A daughter of Prospector's Halo who became a stakes winner in her 2-year-old finale when dominating the Three Ring Stakes here last December, Halo Reality has had only three published works in preparation for her return. But she did turn in a near-black-letter five-furlong drill on Aug. 30.

Happily Unbridled has raced just three times since the Bonnie Miss, finishing a troubled sixth in the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland and a tiring seventh in the Grade 3 Dogwood at Churchill Downs before being sidelined because of an ulcer problem. She finally returned here four weeks ago, finishing a game third, making her grass debut in the Delta Love Stakes.

"I was very pleased with her first race back and like her stablemate, Flying Birdie, it showed me she'll run on either turf or dirt which opens up a lot of options," said owner-trainer Happy Alter, who has saddled eight winners from only 27 starters at the meet, including a pair of stakes victories with the speedy Flying Birdie. "She was bothered by ulcers earlier this summer, but seems to have recovered - although it might take her a couple of races to return to her best."

Happily Unbridled drew the rail and should be a pace factor under jockey Cornelio Velazquez, along with North Park Legend, who also comes off the turf and hopes to repeat her second-place finish behind the odds-on Valid Forbes in the Designated Dancer Stakes.

Valid Forbes, who will race coupled in the wagering with Halo Reality, was not as fortunate at the post position draw and must break from the extreme outside in the Judy's Red Shoes. A daughter of Valid Appeal, Valid Forbes returns against 3-year-olds after finishing fifth, beaten three lengths, by older horses in the Nancy's Glitter Stakes on Aug. 25.
