Bold World's half-sister intriguing

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company, which has logged record numbers for both average and median prices for the first two of its four 2002 sales of 2 year-olds in training, begins its third sale at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The four-day event is the biggest sale of its kind anywhere and this year the OBS had to limit the catalog to slightly more than 1,200 horses. The overflow will be sold in the OBS June 19 sale of 2 year-olds in training.

"Same old, same old," said Tom Ventura, OBS general manager and sales director. "I don't see any changes from the trends that we experienced at the first two of our sales. This is not a selected sale so the buyers have to do a little more homework. When it's all over, the 2 year-olds who work the best and look the part will get the money."

This is not strictly a Florida-bred sale. Of the 1,210 cataloged, 712 are Florida-breds. Kentucky-breds, some 300 of them, are next in numbers followed by 51 who are cataloged as New York-breds.

At this sale last year Farnsworth Farms hit a home run of sorts when it sold a daughter of Fortunate Prospect-Worldly Bold, by World Appeal for $475,000 to Amy Tarant. By and large the pedigree was modest with no blacktype in the first dam and the one-time stakes winner Jolie's Appeal under the second dam. The filly, named Bold World, earned her price because of her speed and conformation. In the past 12 months Bold World has won four races - all of them stakes. Her half-sister, whom Farnsworth named Bold Honoree, is by the freshman stallion Double Honor and is cataloged as Hip No. 38.

"She is smaller than Bold World," said Farnsworth Farms manager Bill Allen, "but for a small package, she knows how to run."

The North American record bid for a 2-year-old in training belongs to a filly by Stormy Atlantic. A daughter of his sold at Barretts on March 5 for $1.9 million. There are 11 2 year-olds for this sale by Stormy Atlantic, a Bridlewood Farm resident stallion whose first crop races this year.

Stormy Atlantic is an 8 year-old bay or brown son of Storm Cat out of Hail Atlantis, by Seattle Slew. Stormy Atlantis was lightly raced at 2 and 3. At 4 he made 13 starts and won six of them, including two stakes, and placed in a third stakes - all of them sprints. The family boasts such stallions as Ridan, Lt. Stevens, Apalachee, and all are either siblings to or out of the champion 2 year-old filly Moccasin.

When the whole pedigree of Stormy Atlantic is fleshed out, the Northern Dancer influence on the top of this pedigree chart becomes obvious. Moccasin's full sister Thong is a direct tail-line descendant of the Northern Dancer stallions Nureyev and Sadler's Wells.

Among the first-crop stallions who won graded stakes are Double Honor (with 21 cataloged), Semoran (15), Diligence (13), Concerto (8) and Northern Afleet (5). Double Honor, who was a precocious stakes-winning 2-year-old, along with Diligence and Northern Afleet, who were stakes-placed at 2, are grandsons of Mr. Prospector. Semoran is from the Icecapade stirp and Concerto is a grandson of Danzig.

Those buyers unable to attend the under tack preview shows will be able to view the sales horses via videotape. Scratches from this sale are posted periodically on the OBS website: www.obssales.com.
