Bold Union ships up in good shape

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It's going to take a little more than Saratoga's incessant rain to dampen trainer Kelly Breen's enthusiasm about running Bold Union in Wednesday's Grade 2, $150,000 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga.

"She's here and she's sitting on go, doing tremendous," said Breen, who shipped Bold Union here from Monmouth Park over the weekend. "I have a lot of nervous energy."

The Adirondack, for 2-year-old fillies going 6o1/2 furlongs, kicks off the second half of what has so far been a soggy 140th Saratoga meet.

Bold Union, a daughter of Dixie Union, has won her first two starts by a combined 20 1/4 lengths. That included a 9 3/4-length score in the Astoria at Belmont on June 29. Breen opted to skip the Schuylerville here on opening day and felt like a genius after the track came up sloppy. But the track could up come up sloppy again on Wednesday.

On Monday, Breen let Bold Union run through the stretch of a wet Saratoga main track, and "she loved it," he said.

What impressed him most about Bold Union is her turn of foot.

"In her last race we tried to rate her a little bit," Breen said. "Stewart [Elliott] said she was rating nicely, and the next thing you know I was in front. She made the lead that easily."

In a workout last week at Monmouth Park, Breen had Bold Union breeze behind two horses.

"She went from four lengths behind to two lengths in front in a sixteenth of a mile," he said. "It was so visually impressive, it's the kind of thing that gives you goose bumps."

Bold Union will break from post 2 under Elliott. She is co-highweight along with Garden District, winner of the Grade 3 Debutante at Churchill Downs on June 28.

Two of the more interesting horses in the field are Doremifasollatido and Pretty Prolific. After losing her debut by a neck, Doremifasollatido, trained by Jimmy Jerkens, romped to a six-length maiden victory at Belmont on July 4. She dueled outside another horse through a half-mile in 45.54 seconds, then cruised home a final eighth in 11.82. She has followed that with a solid work tab, including a bullet half-mile in 48 seconds on Aug. 9.

Pretty Prolific, Dorothy's Essence, Simplify, Golden Artemis, and Mani Bhavan round out the field.
