Bluegrass Warrior dies at 22

A local legend passed away last week. Bluegrass Warrior, former holder of three track records at Turfway Park, including one North American record, died at the age of 22. Campaigned by Joanie Cook since his 2-year-old season, Bluegrass Warrior was a true distance horse, setting track records at 1 5/8 miles, 1 3/4 miles and two miles. He was retired in 1998. The "sand and sod" distance series at River Downs is named for him.

* Preps for the Cradle Stakes and Bassinet will be Saturday and Sunday, respectively. The first three finishers of each prep can be supplemented to the stakes. The Cradle will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf for the first time this year.

* Edgar Paucar won the first three races Sunday and leads the jockey standings with 37 wins, six more than Rodney Prescott, with only three weeks to go in the meet.
