Blommaert outlasts the rest at Northlands


Allan Blommaert performed consistently well to emerge with the top prize in Northlands Park's third annual Handicapping Championship on September 9-10.

Blommaert, a veteran handicapper from Edmonton, accumulated $260.80 from his $2 win-place wagers in the 30-race contest. There were 10 mandatory races on the first day but only five mandatory races on the second.

Blommaert, who also finished sixth with a total of $186.70 from a second entry, earned $7,815 and a spot in the 2007 DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas along with the second and third-place finishers.

Richard Lee of Calgary, Alberta, finished second with a total of $247.60 and earned a prize of $1,953.

Bob Glenn of Vancouver, British Columbia, had returns of $224.40 to finish third with one of his two entries. Glenn earned prize money of $1,172.

Ray Arsenault of Toronto, Ontario, was the leader after the first day with $140.90 but wound up fourth with $206.30.

The contest attracted a total of 125 entries at $125 apiece.
