Blind Luck will stay at home, skipping Personal Ensign, Molly Pitcher

Blind Luck is still under consideration for a start against males in the Pacific Classic.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Blind Luck will not be sent to New York or New Jersey for a major stakes next weekend, and her participation in the $1 million Pacific Classic next Sunday is not a  certainty, trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said on Saturday.

The champion 3-year-old filly of 2010, Blind Luck will be considered for the Pacific Classic or may skip that race in favor of the Grade 1 Lady’s Secret Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1.

Hollendorfer said that Blind Luck will not start in the Pacific Classic “unless everything is 100 percent in our favor. Or we’ll look for something else,” he said. “We’re definitely not going to New York.”

He reiterated that the long-term goal is the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Churchill Downs in November, a race in which Blind Luck was second last year as the 3-2 favorite.

Aside from the Pacific Classic, Hollendorfer had considered the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga or the Grade 2 Molly Pitcher Stakes at Monmouth Park as possibilities for Blind Luck. Those races will be run next Sunday.

Blind Luck has won 12 of 21 starts and $3,279,520. She has won half of her six starts this year, and is on a three-race winning streak. In her most recent start on July 16, Blind Luck beat rival 4-year-old filly Havre de Grace by a nose in a thrilling running of the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap.

Those two fillies are not likely to meet in the near future. Owner Rick Porter said earlier this week that Havre de Grace will make her next start against males in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 3.

If Blind Luck starts in the Pacific Classic, she will be the lone female in the richest race of the Del Mar meeting. Run over 1 1/4 miles on Polytrack, the Pacific Classic has a probable field of eight to 12 starters – Acclamation, Achak, Bourbon Bay, Don Cavallo, Game On Dude, Jeranimo, Setsuko, Stately Victor, Tres Borrachos, Twirling Candy, and Victory Pete.

Acclamation and Bourbon Bay could start in the $200,000 Del Mar Handicap over 1 3/8 miles on turf the same day. Victory Pete is nominated for Saturday’s $200,000 Del Mar Mile on turf.
