Blazinbeauty beats males in Gottstein Futurity

Blazinbeauty took advantage of a fast and contested pace to win the $65,000 Gottstein Futurity at Emerald Downs on Sunday. The only filly in the seven-horse field, Blazinbeauty paid $14 for her six-length win over So Lucky,  the 1-9 favorite in the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds. The Gottstein was the feature race on the closing-day card.

Ridden by Isaias Enriquez, Blazinbeauty was unhurried early while So Lucky was posting quick interior fractions under pressure from Mixo. So Lucky held a one-length lead after a half-mile in 45.66 seconds and was two lengths clear at the six-furlong mark.  Blazinbeauty started to make her presence known on the stretch turn and was in full flight turning for home while So Lucky was visibly tiring. She took control of the race at the sixteenth pole and drew off. So Lucky held off Sharkzilla, who rallied to finish third.

“I was pretty happy when I saw the other horse chasing the favorite,” said Enriquez. “When I asked her to move she started getting closer and closer with every stride. I thought I had the race won at the quarter pole.”

It was the first loss for So Lucky and second straight stakes win for Blazinbeauty.
