Blazin Fire bids for championship repeat

Blazin Fire, the 2007 champion mare, should be favored to continue her run for a second straight championship title when she starts in the Grade 1, $250,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap for females Saturday at Los Alamitos.

The Mildred Vessels winner receives an invitation to the Grade 1, $1 million Champion of Champions on Dec. 13 at Los Alamitos. The 400-yard stakes is Quarter Horse racing's richest race for fillies and mares and attracted a full field of 10.

Blazin Fire comes into the Mildred Vessels off a game head win in the Merial California Distaff Challenge on Aug. 22. In that 400-yard stakes, she rallied to win by a head.

A year ago, Blazin Fire made her successful championship run in the fall at Los Alamitos with wins in the California Distaff Challenge, Distaff Challenge Championship, and the Las Damas Handicap. Each of those stakes wins came at odds of even-money or shorter.

Clydette Mia defeated Blazin Fire in the Easy Date Handicap on July 6 and is back for another go at the reigning champion mare. The Easy Date was Blazin Fire's first start in more than seven months.

Clydette Mia won the Easy Date with a track-record-equaling time of 15.07 seconds for the 300 yards. The 4-year-old mare is building her championship re'sume' in 2008 with 5 wins from 5 starts. She started her streak at the $50,000 claiming level, won a couple of conditioned allowances, and then took two minor stakes.
