Oscietra, the first foal out of unbeaten champion Black Caviar, finished third in her career debut at Flemington in Australia on Sunday.

Under Black Caviar’s regular rider, Luke Nolen, Oscietra broke sharply and led the field through the early stages of the five-furlong event before being run down late by Limestone and Miss Wahoo.

Oscietra, by Exceed And Excel, was foaled in September 2014, meaning that by Southern Hemisphere standards, she is considered a 2-year-old. Black Caviar delivered a Sebring colt in September 2015 and a Snitzel filly in September 2016. She was recently confirmed back in foal to WinStar Farm’s More Than Ready, a successful shuttle sire at Vinery Stud in Australia.

Black Caviar was twice honored as Australia’s Horse of the Year while winning all 25 of her starts and earning more than $7.4 million. She raced primarily in Australia, where she won 14 Group 1 events, but traveled to England in 2012 to compete at the renowned Royal Ascot meeting, where she won the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee.
