Bingham survives objection in Pomona Derby

Email

POMONA, Calif.- Bingham overcame a stumble at the start and a rival jockey's objection regarding the stretch run to win his first stakes in Saturday's $98,000 Pomona Derby at Fairplex Park.

Ridden by Alonso Quinonez, Bingham ($8.60) led throughout, winning by 2 1/2 lengths over Pistol Pete Afleet. Trained by Jeff Mullins for Dennis Weir, Bingham ran about 1 1/8 miles in 1:51.89

Pistol Pete Afleet finished a half-length in front of Dakota Phone. Dreamed Day finished fourth in the field of seven, with 8-5 favorite Trevor's Clever never reaching contention and finishing fifth.

Dreamed Day was second in early stretch when he clipped heels with Bingham. Jockey David Flores, who rode Dreamed Day, lodged an objection, which was disallowed by track stewards.

Bingham has won 4 of 7 starts and $122,187. He was fourth in the Alydar Stakes and Grade 3 Affirmed Handicap at Hollywood Park earlier this year.

* Gambler's Justice ($3.80) won the first stakes of her career in the $63,700 CTBA Marian Stakes. Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Gambler’s Justice ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.45, finishing 2 3/4 lengths in front of Quid Non in the field of seven statebred 3-year-old fillies.
