Big Glen survives wide trip

Big Glen made a big sweeping move en route to a 1 1/4-length victory under James Lopez in the $50,000 WEBN Stakes at Turfway Park.

Shipping back to Kentucky from south Florida for trainer Frank Brothers, Big Glen ($14.80) drew away from pacesetting Mr. Harry, then had enough left to finish clear of a belated run by by Your Round. U. S. Cavalry, the 2-1 favorite, faded to fourth and Texas Fever finished fifth in a field of 10 3-year-olds.

Big Glen, a colt by Cactus Ridge, completed a mile in 1:38.48 over Polytrack. Owned by John T.L. Jones and Bill Jones, Big Glen won a Dec. 8 allowance race at Turfway before shipping to the Palm Meadows training center with the rest of the Brothers stable.

Mr. Harry set the pace and held a clear lead in the turn for home but was no match for Big Glen, who was unable to save ground in either turn after breaking from the far outside post. Your Round, ridden by Victor Lebron, rallied even wider than the winner when gaining the place.

The WEBN is a prep for two bigger races in Turfway's annual series for 3-year-olds. Next up are the March 1 John Battaglia Memorial and the March 22 Lane's End Stakes.
