MIAMI – Big Drama worked five furlongs in 1:00.76 seconds on Saturday over a fast but cuppy racetrack at Calder as he continues to prepare for his appearance in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.
Working after the renovation break, Big Drama jogged once around the track alongside a pony, backing up to the wire before turning around and eventually breaking off at the five-furlong pole. After going an easy opening quarter in 12.50 seconds, he gradually picked up the pace, posting splits of 24.62, 36.38, and 48.50 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.08.
“I thought it was a good move,” said trainer David Fawkes who observed the work from the finish line. “He finished well, he went the last quarter in just over 24 over a track that was kind of dead this morning.”
Big Drama, runner-up in both the Grade 2 Alfred Vanderbilt and Grade 1 Forego in his last two starts, is currently scheduled to have two more works at Calder before shipping to Churchill Downs early Breeders’ Cup week.
Best Bets
MOST HAPPY FELLA, reclaimed from last, drops to easier spot after setting pressured pace vs. odds-on Pinball; both wins last year came on this track. ARTIE LUVSTO PARTY has a knack for surprises, with three lifetime wins coming at 33-1, 17-1 & 11-1 (two on this track); entrymate EQUIVOCATION gets major rider switch first off a claim. PURE ATTITUDE among top 3 in wins & earnings and snug fit to date clause.
