Big Drama by three in first leg of series

MIAMI - Big Drama used his abundant speed to upset Saturday's $100,000 Dr. Fager Stakes, posting a three-length victory over Bee Cee Cee in the first leg of the open division of Calder's Florida Stallion Stakes. You Luckie Mann finished a troubled third as the 3-5 favorite.

Big Drama stalked the early pace of stakes winner Red Nation, forged to command approaching the quarter pole, remained out in the better part of the track while shaking loose nearing midstretch, and was not seriously threatened through the final furlong while kept under steady urging by jockey Paco Lopez. Bee Cee Cee slipped through along the inside to finish a neck in front of the previously undefeated You Luckie Mann. You Luckie Mann hit the side of the gate, then was pinched back after the start to trail the field during the opening furlong. He made a run to contention while well wide into the stretch, but could not sustain his bid.

Big Drama, a homebred son of Montbrook owned by Harold Queen, ran six furlongs in 1:11.70 over a fast track and returned $19.40. The win was the third of four on the day for Lopez.

"He showed ability from the beginning," said trainer David Fawkes. "He'll go in the Affirmed Stakes next," on Sept. 6. "Extra distance should be no problem for him."

Desert Vixen: Blowout for La Chica Sensual

La Chica Sensual dominated the $100,000 Desert Vixen Stakes, drawing off to an 8 1/4-length victory over the late-running Black Russian in the opening leg of the filly division of the Stallion Stakes. The winning margin was the largest in the 26-year history of the race.

La Chica Sensual, who opened her career racing under a $40,000 claiming tag at Monmouth Park, benefitted from a picture-perfect ride by jockey Ray Fuentes, who allowed the daughter of Lightnin N Thunder to position herself perfectly off the early pace of Oilgonewile and Aroma de Mujer. La Chica Sensual readily overtook the leader midway on the turn, quickly drew well clear in early stretch, then extended her advantage through the final furlong.

Black Russian fanned six wide with her rally entering the stretch to outfinish Aroma de Mujer for second.

La Chica Sensual, runner-up in the J J'sdream Stakes in her previous start, covered six furlongs in 1:11.61 and paid $5.20 as the favorite. She is trained by Pablo Andrade for owners Jennifer Harries and Brenda Tabraue.

As expected, Andrade said La Chica Sensual would point for the next leg of the series, the seven-furlong Susan's Girl, on Sept. 6.

Two capitalize on wet weather

Finallymadeit and Hypocrite proved the beneficiaries when the afternoon's races were taken off the turf, capturing the $55,000 Band Is Passing and Donthelumbertrader stakes, respectively.

Finallymadeit ($5.40), as expected, set a very slow pace en route to a four-length decision over turf specialist Soldier's Dancer in the 1 1/16-mile Band Is Passing, which scratched down to only four starters following the surface change.

Hypocrite ($5) finished strongly down the middle of the track to defeat the tiring He's Eze by three-quarters of a length to win the one-mile Donthelumbertrader for 3-year-olds.
